Education is the cornerstone of the Smithsonian Institution's mission to increase and diffuse knowledge. As we reflect on the achievements of Smithsonian educators from the past year, it's with great pride that we present the Smithsonian Office of the Under Secretary for Education’s Impact Report for FY 2023 (October 1, 2022 – September 30, 2023). This report highlights the many ways in which the Smithsonian continues to champion equitable access to educational content and resources, inspiring curiosity and connections for learners of all ages across the globe.

Here are some of our impactful endeavors you’ll read about in this report.

Beyond the Bell

In 2023, the Smithsonian built on our dynamic partnerships with esteemed organizations like the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and the National 4-H Council, offering immersive educational experiences beyond the classroom walls. Through curated tours and innovative programming, we engaged hundreds of youth in transformative learning experiences at our museums and in students’ hometowns. Themes of social justice, civic engagement, and environmental awareness took center stage, igniting passion and action among the next generation of leaders.

Smithsonian National Education Summit

We empower, celebrate, and inspire educators across the country through free professional development programs, like the Smithsonian National Education Summit, which features leading experts, policymakers, and Smithsonian educators during a multi-day hybrid program. The 2023 Summit brought together thousands of educators from across the globe for a deep dive into strategies for fostering inclusive and supportive learning environments. Real-world case studies, inspirational keynotes, and practical workshops gave educators tools and support to create impactful learning experiences for their students.

Together We Thrive

Through the Together We Thrive grants program, the Smithsonian empowered middle and high school students to discover their passions, express themselves, and envision futures where they can make a difference. Initiatives like Earth Optimism Youth Action and Leadership for Sustainable Communities exemplify our commitment to nurturing youth agency and driving positive change in communities nationwide.

Making an Impact

The generous support of donors and partners is essential to helping us reach every classroom and community in the United States with Smithsonian learning resources. In 2023 we brought together the Smithsonian National Education Outreach Working Group, comprised of volunteer leaders on the Smithsonian National Board and Regional Councils who provide expertise and guidance to help us develop new strategies and partnerships. We also launched the Smithsonian Council for Education, a distinguished group of philanthropists who are committed to the important role education plays in transforming lives.
