Justin Kondrat

Lead Horticulturist Justin Kondrat curates the Smithsonian Gardens Orchid Collection’s exemplary standards for nurturing one of the most biodiverse ex-situ orchid collections within the largest museum complex in the world. He stewards a living collection of 5,000+ orchid specimens and has implemented a long-range vision that enhances the collection’s scientific, cultural, and public value. Justin has improved collection health through innovative cultivation methods, expanded public engagement via exhibitions and digital outreach, and secured support through successful partnerships and donor relations. He manages operational systems that ensure the collection’s vitality, including facility maintenance, risk management plans, and new SOPs. Justin mentors interns, strengthens volunteer programs, and contributes to thematic exhibitions. He serves on key committees, including the National Plant Collection Network (NPCN) Orchidaceae and the Smithsonian Garden Orchid Exhibition.
