Neptune May Have Once Witnessed a Lunar Massacre That Turned Its Original Moons ‘Inside Out’

Neptune’s system of moons may have been the victim of an ancient astronomical calamity that saw an intruder barrel in and tear the orbiting bodies apart. The culprit may still be around, and researchers have tracked down evidence of its violent arrival in some of the planet’s current moons, which they say formed from the guts of the vanquished ones.

In a study published July 29 in Science Advances, researchers investigated Neptune’s rings and three of its inner moons using spectroscopy, a technique that analyzes wavelengths of light to reveal an object’s chemical makeup. They identified unexpected clay minerals that point to a destructive episode in Neptune’s past—and the perpetrator of that destruction, they say, is probably the planet’s largest moon, Triton.

Fun fact: Discovery of Neptune’s largest moon

When Neptune’s largest moon, Triton, was first spotted, “beer helped make the finding possible” in a roundabout way, according to NASA. The moon’s discoverer, English merchant and amateur astronomer William Lassell, had made a fortune in the brewery business, and he used that money to fund his telescopes.

Spectroscopic data from the James Webb Space Telescope revealed evidence of magnesium-rich phyllosilicates in the rings and in two of the moons. Phyllosilicates are a group of minerals that can only form in the presence of liquid water, but the team didn’t find signs of water ice in any of the moons or rings. That begs a rather crucial question—how did the minerals get there?

“These minerals require prolonged contact between liquid water and rock to form,” Ryleigh Davis, a planetary scientist at the University of California, San Diego, and lead author of the study, tells Reuters’ Will Dunham. “The moons themselves are far too small ​and cold for that chemistry to have occurred in place, so the clay had to come from somewhere else—the deep interior of ⁠a much larger ancient world.”

Enter Triton, perhaps the strangest object in Neptune’s already unusual satellite system. It follows a retrograde orbit, meaning it travels around its host counter to the planet’s rotation. The new hypothesis is that this oddball—which was born somewhere else in the solar system, likely the Kuiper Belt—got pulled in by Neptune’s gravity and proceeded to wreck its original moon system. A small amount of the resulting debris was eventually recycled into today’s much smaller moons, the team suggests, giving scientists rare insight that they might not otherwise have access to.

“The interiors of large, icy moons are normally permanently hidden from us, buried beneath thick shells of water ice,” Davis tells Space.com’s Charles Q. Choi. “Neptune’s inner moons may be the only place in the solar system where we can directly observe that material, because a catastrophic event essentially turned those ancient worlds inside out.”

The team did not detect phyllosilicates in Proteus, the third and largest of the three studied moons, indicating that it may have formed from a different area of the debris disk than the other two examined moons, Larissa and Galatea. Or, the minerals in Proteus may have later been destroyed by heating.

The recent study aligns with a previous paper from some of the same authors that paints a similar picture of a lunar massacre. It suggests that when Triton was captured, it pushed the moon Nereid, the only complete survivor of the ensuing chaos, into a wide and especially elliptical orbit. However, Davis and her colleagues point out that there could be another, albeit less likely, scenario: A different Pluto-sized object from the Kuiper Belt might have been snatched up and ripped apart by Neptune’s gravity.

“Either way, what we’re seeing on these moons had to come from deep inside something much larger,” Davis says in a statement.

The discovery of the mystery material “just highlights, again, how much we don’t know,” Helen Maynard-Casely, a planetary scientist at the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organization who did not participate in the study, tells the Australian Broadcasting Corporation’s Ellen Phiddian.

In the future, scientists could chip away at the unknown with a new space probe. Voyager 2 is the sole spacecraft to have ever dropped by Neptune, the most distant planet from the sun, and that was in 1989. Maynard-Casely adds that sending another probe to Neptune is highly coveted: “Every planetary scientist worth their sodium chloride wants a Uranus-Neptune mission.”
