Photographers from around the world entered more than 17,000 images into the 23rd Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest. Spanning six categories—American Experience, Artistic, Drone/Aerial, People, Travel and Wildlife—60 marvelous photographs were chosen by the magazine's editors as finalists, and you can see them all below. The captions were written by the photographers themselves.

Be sure to vote for your favorite; the polls will be open through March 30, and you can vote once per day. The winner of that competition, as well as the grand prize and category winners will be announced in April.

Symbols
Leaning against the gun of a tank now defeated by time and rust, this man poses with the calm of one who has seen history change many times. His glasses, decorated with the American flag, reflect a paradox in the country's history: a fragment of the West in the heart of Afghanistan. There is no provocation or irony in his gaze, only the calm and silence of someone who lives daily among the ruins of the past and imported symbols. Behind him, a child plays where there was once war, while a passerby leaves it behind. He, however, remains impassive. Andrea Peruzzi

The composition constructs a space between formality, writing and the body. A figure leans over as ink-like black lines flow slowly across the surface. Traces of red from the face extend into the space. Through minimalist composition and strong chromatic contrast, the image explores the tension between creation, consumption and self-projection, as well as the silence and imbalance experienced in the process of expression.  Dongbo Liu
Becoming Sea and Sky
Barefoot on the wet sand of Havelock Island, a woman lifts her face toward the canopy as water curls around her feet. The long exposure leaves a translucent trace of her movement, as if she is dissolving into the air and sea. It’s a quiet, ecstatic moment of surrender to place. Rajeev Anand
Pregnant Water Flea
Using the method of focus encirclement, I took 49 pictures and stacked them with Helicon Focus software to get the final image. Jianguo Mao
Red Porcelain Against Green
The figure holds a red vessel in her hands while four others are arranged in a sequential composition, establishing a rhythm of order and repetition. Set against the subdued green space, the red object strikes a restrained yet resonant note. Through its use of color, layering and still-life composition, the photograph captures a state of suspension between cultural symbol and interior emotion. Jiaqi Xu
