In 1974, the DynaTAC cell phone became the first portable phone on the consumer market. It was 13 inches tall, and fat as a brick. In the last forty years, cell phone technology has changed considerably. This animation, by Amrit Pal Singh, takes you through those years, from the DynaTAC to the Oribitel TPU900 to the iPhone:

Starting with the DynaTAC in 1974 and ending with a side-by-side comparison between the iPhone 5s and the Galaxy Note, I crafted the 40-year history of the mobile cell phone. For some it will be a walk down memory lane, for others a history lesson.

So while the next big iPhone announcement might not blow you away, we’ve come pretty far since 1974.
