William Root House

One of the oldest homes in the Atlanta area, the Root House is more typical of its time and place than the columned mansions popularized by Gone With the Wind. Though the home and grounds have been meticulously restored to their 1850s appearance, modern touchscreens and award-winning interactive displays have been installed to tell the story of the Root family and their enslaved house servants.

Exhibits

Begin your visit by checking in at the Root House Museum Visitor Center located inside a refurbished 1830s log cabin. The cabin is also home to the Root House Museum Gift Shop, featuring a variety of local handcrafted gifts and small batch mercantile goods. After checking in, guests are free to explore the museum campus at their own leisure. Interactive touchscreen displays and comprehensive exhibits allow for self-guided discovery based on your personal interests.

Participation in Museum Day is open to any tax-exempt or governmental museum or cultural venue on a voluntary basis.
