The Historic Oakleigh House Museum

King Cotton, urban slavery, railroad expansion, deadly epidemics, the Civil War, emancipation … Oakleigh has witnessed many events in this thriving 300-year-old port city. Authentic period rooms allow you to experience Mobile’s history through the eyes of Oakleigh’s residents. Travel through time as you travel through one of Mobile’s oldest and grandest homes.

Built by Virginian, James W. Roper, in 1833, Oakleigh is a remarkable example of historic preservation, as it has been adapted and preserved by the families who lived here. As one of the first major residences to be built outside of the city limits, historians cite Oakleigh among the finest examples of Greek revival architecture in the United States.
