Washing My Boat

A boatman washes his boat, or sampan in the local language, at the Ghat of Buriganga River. The livelihood of the boatmen depends on their boats, which are used mainly to ferry people across the wide Buriganga River, which cuts through Dhaka city. Caring for their vehicle that puts food on the table is a passion for these boatmen, being what they have done for decades. With their livelihood being threatened by larger modern ferries, these boatmen still holds steadfast to their tradition and trade, passed down from their forefathers. It is with hope that the deep cultures and traditions of the boatmen will be sustained, and remain an identity of Dhaka in years to come.
