Turkish ceramic decor surrounding an entryway of a carved dwelling in Avanos, Turkey

The Anatolian region is largely known as an area where some of the first civilizations developed. In Avanos, Turkey, the ceramic trade and it's development of pottery factories date back to the Hittites around 1600 BC. Much of the area is composed of red slit which is used to make the ceramic clay. The building structure in the photo is all carved out from the pre-existing stone, much like the dwellings seen in Cappadocia.
