The Old Elbe Tunnel was a technical sensation in 1911 when it opened. It is still in operation and has become a nostalgic piece of Hamburg history. A pedestrian and vehicle tunnel under the river Elbe, it is 24m below the surface, 426 meters longs, and connects central Hamburg with the docks and shipyards. It was the first river tunnel on the European continent and has been designated a protected monument in 2003.
