16th Annual Smithsonian.com Photo Contest
Surfing at nightfall, Devon.

After an October beach picnic in South Devon, the boys – big, small and four-legged – decided to brave the icy waves just as night was about to fall. The moment the sun went down the temperatures dropped, but the colours lit up the sky and transformed the sand with a mercurial shimmer. Watching, captivated, as the the scene changed from one photo to another, I was oblivious to the cold until the light faded to deep purple then finally slipped away.
