16th Annual Smithsonian.com Photo Contest
December 2017. I was on a 15 day trip in southeast Asia to visit a friend of mine studying in Kuala Lumpur. I first flew to Bangkok via Hanoi, took a bus to the south, and then traveled by ferry to the coastal town of Krabi.
It was a hot sunny day, and it inevitably brought me to Railay beach - where I took this picture.
After exploring around the peninsula, I went back to the beach and pulled out one of my disposable waterproof cameras. I walked into the sea, both of my feet soaked, taking pictures of landscapes and people on the beach and in the sea. At the moment, an idea of swimming into the water wasn’t on my mind since I did not have my swimsuit with me.
The moment when I tried to capture the blue sea, a random child jumped (or flowed) into my frame out of the blue. I stopped looking through the viewfinder and watched people play in the water.
The sun above us in the blue sky. People sleeping on the beach. My sweaty shirt. Cold, clear blue sea. I felt, if I leave the beach without swimming, I would surely regret it. I looked at my clothes.
I started walking into the deeper part of the sea.
