A "Yardang" is a formation carved from bedrock or solid natural material by the dual action of wind abrasion, dust and sand, and stream of water. The rock is eroded into alternating ridges and furrows parallel to the direction of the wind. Yardangs occur in various deserts of the world, and often have irregular shapes.
