Commissioned by George Washington and dedicated by the Marquis de Lafayette in 1791, Portland Head Lighthouse is the oldest lighthouse in Maine. It is the site of the shipwreck of the Annie C Maguire that occurred on Christmas Eve, in 1886, It was also a favorite inspiration location for the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow who would walk to the lighthouse from his home in Portland, Maine.
