Open Doors at Koutoubia Mosque
Backpacking through Morocco, I stopped by the Koutoubia Mosque in Marrakech at sunset. As a lone cry echoed throughout the arrid city, calling the faithful to prayer, I was struck by the image of a procession of open doors, the warm glow of hanging lanterns unfolding into the mosque's dark interior. I thought of my life, and all the choices I had made and obstacles I had overcome that had opened up to this very moment. With a twinge of irony I remembered that this welcoming succession was not actually open to me, a female non Muslim, but to the two figures sitting just outside.
