The New Year festival of Likir Monastery, Ladakh is popularly known as ‘Dosmoche’. During the festival, mystic dance drama ‘chham’ is performed by lamas robed in colorful dresses and frightful masks. The elaborate ritual connected with this popular local festival is widely seen as an attempt to appease God so that he protects the humanity from the threat of evil. On the days of Dosmoche Festival, one quaint ritual is followed by another to mark the triumph of good over evil.
