Incan terraces at Moray, Peru
Agricultural terraces at Moray, an ancient Inca ruin northwest of Cusco, Peru. Unlike rectangular terraces at Machu Picchu and other Incan sites, which were used for routine food production, these circular terraces may have been used for scientific experimentation to select for corn that could grow at a variety of temperatures to support the vast expanse of the Incan empire.
