15th Annual Smithsonian.com Photo Contest
Food for thought
The photograph was taken at Kotzia square in Athens. The
colorful canopies were part of Rasheed Araeen's public exhibition "Food for thought: thought for change", inspired by the shamiyaana, a Pakistani traditional wedding tent. The work was composed of a makeshift wooden restaurant situated in the middle of the square opposite Athens City Hall, and anyone could have a free meal twice a day. Since strangers were invited to sit together, often refuges, homeless people, migrants, tourists and Greeks visiting the exhibition were sitting together at the same table.
