12th Annual Smithsonian.com Photo Contest
Celebrating my 10.000th kilometer anniversary.
I love hitchhiking. I started to hitchhike to save money with 19, in France. And I fell in love with people, their stories, their kindness, the beauty of our diversity, and also of our similarities across borders. Since then, I regularly hitchhike in Europe. While hitchhiking, I systematically write down what I learn from my drivers, meaningful stories and meaningless details, what inspire me by them. Sometimes, when they accept it, I take pictures. This picture was taken at the Croatian-Serbian border, where I symbolically blew a candle to mark my 10.000th kilometer hitchhiking (approximatively). This was in Mai 2013; since then, I reached the 20.000th one.
