I took a day trip to Novi Sad, Serbia during my visit to Belgrade in August 2015. At the time, the eyeglasses structure struck me as reminiscent of both Big Brother and the book cover often accompanying the Great Gatsby. To me, it evoked Serbia's past in the Eastern Bloc, but also tied in it's longing, like Gatsby's, for a brighter future after its recent involvement the Yugoslav Wars. When the news stories broke a few days later of the migrant crisis and I realized that the sea of people I saw camping near the Belgrade bus station were in fact Syrian refugees, the motif of longing for a brighter future seemed even more fitting and meaningful for this country acting as a gateway to freedom.
