Monument Valley is a wonderful example of sustainable travel. Navajo leaders recognized early on "the need to preserve and conserve these lands for future generations for their enjoyment and spiritual well-being, and, in accordance with Navajo custom, to welcome visitors from all over the world." As it states on its web site, Monument Valley "faces tremendous challenges to accomplish its mandate to manage, protect and preserve these special areas because of the growing Navajo population, the need to promote economic and social opportunity for the people, and the huge number of visitors who come to see, learn and experience the wonders of the Navajo Nation." They have done a wonderful job fulfilling their mission.
