14th Annual Smithsonian.com Photo Contest
I spent a month in Uganda volunteering at a school, and while there, I met a young girl in the village who was under the care of her grandmother. The girl was about 12 years old and had to drop out of school because her grandmother could not afford the fees. Friends and I decided to pay for the girl so she could go back to school. And so, the girl and her grandmother got ready. The grandmother put on this lovely traditional garment and walked the the very long distance with us to the girl's school. It was quite far, and much of it was uphill, but the grandmother persisted. She was very old, but she somehow managed the very steep uphill climb to the school. When we met with the headmaster and paid the fees, she was overjoyed. I snapped this photo as she began the long journey back home...
