14th Annual Smithsonian.com Photo Contest
On day 16 of rafting the Colorado River, we successfully maneuvered our boats away from a class 4 rapid and into Havasu Canyon. After a quick snack, we left the dark green waters of the Colorado and headed into the limestone canyon for an afternoon of turquoise waterfalls. My breathe was taken when I saw my friend Michael relaxing in the wall of the canyon with nothing but his inflatable kayak and his journal.
Sustainable travel inspires conservation. During our 226 mile, 25 day journey, the only light we needed were from the sun and the stars. Everywhere we camped and rested was left cleaner than how we found it. Even after 1.5 years since our journey, I still devote my energy to protecting our rivers and ocean.
I am thankful to the National Park Service and Havasupai Indian Reservation for their commitment to keep this international treasure protected for generations to enjoy
