Horse Foal in Rimlight

On the steppes of eastern Kazakhstan, I visited a family of herders who raise cattle and horses. Every evening, they bring the herd into a corral to protect them from predators and thieves. Shooting at sunset, I hoped to get a silhouette of the horsemen and animals. I never would have guessed the light would illuminate the fuzzy hair and mane of the baby horse. This photograph was a blend of planning, execution, and serendipity.
