14th Annual Smithsonian.com Photo Contest
The desert southwest provides an opportunity to embrace a number of my life passions at once. By photographing gorgeous landscapes, ancient ruins, and mysterious petroglyphs beneath brilliant night skies I can express my appreciation of the depth of this land’s original inhabitants, the stunning beauty of the land itself, and the fathomless scale of time and space in which all of this occurs.
The night sky represents the purest form of wilderness, the vast eternity which cannot be manipulated or destroyed. The legacy of ancient cultures photographed beneath this radiant universe brings into focus how brief is humanity’s entire tenure on this planet. Photographing these elusive landscapes is a way of entering timelessness, a way of experiencing these forgotten places in their greatest context, a context shared by all humans—we are but momentary flashes of awareness on a tiny ball in a vast universe.
