"Adorable Wilma" at the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre, Sabah, Borneo

Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre in Borneo was founded in 1964 to rehabilitate orphan orangutans. Today, the facility provides care and a safe habitat for orphan and rescued orangutans. Once the orangutans develop their surviving skills, they may be released into the wild. What impressed me the most was the dignity, admiration, and respect the staff has for these animals. They can tell the name, age, past history, and personally of each individual orangutan. The Center is owned and run by the Sabah Wildlife Department, and additional funding comes from entrance fees and charitable donations. You can also “adopt” a baby orangutan, and receive regular pictures and updates! The visit is truly a magical experience, as the trees begin to shake and a flash of orange limbs emerges from the forest.
