15th Annual Smithsonian.com Photo Contest
Women of Artsakh

Kashatag region, Vaghazin village area, NKR. The HALO trust’s 1st team of female deminers, deployed in July 2015. The team is locally recruited, all the 5 women are from Kashatag region of NKR.They work on the minefields 6 days a week from 8 am to 5pm. Landmines were used extensively during the 1992-1994 war. Since the war ended, 328 people have been killed or maimed by landmines and UXO bombs.
