The pierced penance

Every year, in April, a festival is held in eastern parts of India, particularly West Bengal, where people pay their obeisance to the Hindu god, Shiva. They pierce their bodies with metal hooks and also suspend themselves in air using those hooks and ropes attached to them. This picture shows the preparation of one such devotee.
