14th Annual Smithsonian.com Photo Contest
The towns in Tuscany are all old as you would expect - crumbling buildings marked by centuries of wear and tear, steps that have been trod on so much that they have lost their shape, and an atmosphere that retains a feeling of antiquity that permeates every facet of existence. Scansano is a bubble, and it is so easy to get lost in it for hours. This is exactly what I did, walking around the town for two days. I wanted to capture the essence of the town with a photo of one of its inhabitants. Even though the child is shrouded in darkness, the typically human way in which he exists in a place that is permeated with history puts into perspective the concept of culture in different places - a photo of a child on a bike can be taken anywhere, but the variety of existences that can be captured by doing this are innumerable.
