12th Annual Smithsonian.com Photo Contest
Mastura tells her grandchildren Shakhboz and Aziza she may have to give them up to an orphanage as the winter is approaching and they live in a cellar just outside Tajikistan's capital Dushanbe. Mastura is 73 and her pension is less than 30$ a day. She became children's guardian 5 years ago, after their father, a migrant worker in Russia, was brought back home in a coffin. Their mother has abandoned them. About half the country’s population lives below the poverty line. However a 15 year old Shahboz cherishes his dream to become a policeman and send his little sister to school. For now they have to sell chewing gum after school outside of Dushanbe's expensive restaurants to make an extra 3$ a day.
