16th Annual Smithsonian.com Photo Contest
This image is my brother standing under a street light in rural Maine, near Pemaquid Point. We have been visiting this area of Maine for most of our childhood, and the past 23 years. Virtually the only light here at night is the Lighthouse on the point. At the end of its parking lot, one single street lamp lit this pool of pavement. We actually went for a walk to photograph the lighthouse, at sunset, and on our way back I watched my brother enter this one pool of light surrounded by darkness and recognized this as the most captivating image of the night.
