16th Annual Smithsonian.com Photo Contest
The photo was taken in a small and traditional cafe in the oldest part of the city (Tetuan, Morocco). The man spent years with the same habit, coming to this cafe every evening, engaging in long conversations with his mates from the same generation about life, their struggles and their experiences. I, as an outsider, tried to join them and learn more about their stories and through them, the story of their city. I learned recently that he passed away it sadden me to know that they are the last generation that lived there when the city was under Spanish rule. And as they are being forgotten, a whole popular culture in going extinct.
