15th Annual Smithsonian.com Photo Contest
The two Korean nations are still at war. All Korean men above the age of 19 are required to serve two years in the military. This mandatory conscription leaves young men in complex emotions: pride in protecting the country, sadness of leaving their families, fear for training, and even anger for being forced to devote two years of their youth to the military. This mixture of emotions reach climax when trimming for short hair. This photograph expresses this stage.
