14th Annual Smithsonian.com Photo Contest
Taken in a Kamous village in Luang Prabang, Laos, while on a two week service trip in Southeast Asia. I got to know this particular boy in the village after feeding him and some other village children my lunch. This boy spoke no english, so I don't know his name or how old he is. However, this did not stop him from touching my heart. Despite living in a poor and starving village, he was the comedy leader amongst his giggly friends. He would dance and laugh, make faces for the camera, and laugh more at the pictures. From my perspective, living the way he did seemed impossible, but the way he made himself and other children laughed gave me incredible hope. I'll never forget him, his attitude touched me in a way that needed no words.
