Ioana, a tomatoe woman
Ioana is 45 years old tomatoes picker. “Three years ago I was working in a greenhouse. I was harassed and blackmailed by my former boss, a 65 years old man. I refused his sexual advances and immediately lost my job. All the women I know went through the same experience once they arrived here. If you are married, it is easier, but if you are alone, you are done for.”
For female migrant workers in the greenhouses of Italian tomato exporters reporting sexual harassment to the police is most often unsuccessful because women are not often believed. The police often side with bosses. Moreover, it is frequently said that the sexual coercion the women experience is not abuse because they “like it.”
