16th Annual Smithsonian.com Photo Contest
My travel group was standing in a courtyard of a parochial school and church in the shadow of a dormant volcano in Santiago Guatemala. We were watching an elderly lady in colorful clothing reconstruct her hat by winding a very long strip of cloth similar to how you would wrap a turban. My guide gave her a tip. Behind her, the disheveled disabled lady in my picture slowly made her way across the courtyard. It broke my heart to see. She is the one who needed the tip the most.
