Bloody Myths- Periods
Women and young girls, all over the world, who menstruate, are often ostracised from basic activities, and are imposed with various dietary restrictions, social isolation. Cultural norms and religious taboos on menstruation are often compounded by traditional associations with evil spirits, shame and embarrassment surrounding sexual reproduction. The notions of impurity and pollution are also attached them. Such taboos are sustained on myths about menstruation and impact girls' and women's lifestyle, emotional, mental and physical health. The challenge of addressing these socio-cultural myths is further compounded by little or no knowledge about puberty, menstruation and reproductive health. It disempowers women, causing them to feel embarrassed about a normal biological process and robs them of their potential.
