14th Annual Photo Contest
Wild Black Bear Sow standing on her hind legs.

While taking photos of this Wild Black Bear Sow I was surprised when she stood up on her hind legs in front of me. She was trying to get a better look at the owner of the property who was walking up a hill towards us. I've been photographing her for years and she has a special relationship with the property owner who has known her since she was a cub. She stood until he reached where I was sitting and then sat down and went back to scratching herself against a tree. Standing is not aggressive behavior by a black bear; it's simply a way for them to survey their environment and make sure there is no threat to their cubs or themselves.
