Western grebe at sunrise
This has been a tremendous year for the grebes (both Western & Clark's) at Lake Hodges in Escondido, CA. After seven years, they have finally begun breeding again, and the air has been filled with the sounds of mating calls and "rushing" - a coordinated mating dance across the surface of the water. This Western grebe, captured during the golden hour at sunrise, is carrying a chick under the fluffed up feathers on his/her back.
