Watchful waiting

The Great Migration of wildebeest and zebras in the Serengeti holds ready many obstacles and claims the lives of many animals. While hundreds and thousands of individuals follow their predecessors on the way to richer feeding grounds, zebras are known to play a crucial role in leading the way of the yearly cycle. Considered smarter than wildebeest, they are among the pathfinders of the Great Migration. One of its most spectacular events is the crossing of the Mara River. This stressful endeavour costs many lives due to exhaustion in rapids or the attacks of awaiting crocodiles. While the zebras lead the way on land, they usually give way to courageous wildebeest - observing the situation first and often saving their own lives by joining the masses at a later point.
