The cicadas' journey

Cicadas' nymphs can stay for years bellow the ground until they are finally ready for the ecdysis. Some species can wait up to 17 years for this unique moment. Before that, they stay buryed while feeding on the roots sap. When at the right time, the nymphs make a hole, leave the ground and climb the closest tree. So a fantastic phenomena happens: a slit opens on their backs and they leave the old exoskeleton. Usually, this is a highly sincronized event when millions of cicadas do the ecdysis and become adults. Then, they quickly begin to "sing" to attract their mates.
