The Arrival of Elephant Seals
Once a year during the winter, the elephant seals arrive to Chimney Rock at Point Reyes National Seashore to establish dominance and territory on this beach. By the late 1800s, northern elephant seals had nearly been hunted to extinction. Since then they have been making a gradual comeback, including a breeding population that appeared on this area. Today, their population has incresaed making an amazing recovery that was once lost by hunting.
