12th Annual Smithsonian Magazine Photo Contest

Driving into Monument Valley is always stunning with the giant sandstone buttes towering all around you. On this particular afternoon I drove through a torrential downpour with lightning strikes everywhere. Once I got to the location that I wanted I set my camera up and waited for a strike. Out of the 2 hours that I was photographing this storm I captured about 100 strikes but this one was my favorite.
