13th Annual Smithsonian.com Photo Contest
Red, white, brown and blue
This image was taken near the coast of Gujarat, where saline water leaches through the sandy desert to form pools of water. As the water evaporates, a crust of salt hems in these pools. The briny waters on occasion also have algal blooms that tint them red or pink.
