14th Annual Smithsonian.com Photo Contest
Photo taken from road leading to Grand Canyon National Park
Photo taken during our family vacation to Utah and Arizona National Parks, July 2014. We had begun the long drive from Bryce Canyon in Utah to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. When we entered the park officially, there were still miles and miles to go before reaching Grand Canyon Lodge where we were staying. In the park on either side, we saw these trees which looked dead or burnt out, and I wasn't sure why. They were so very stark against the big blue sky full of clouds and I thought the contrast was so simple and beautiful, I took a few photos, even though it was sad to see the trees in this condition.
