Pelicans on a Prairie Pothole

On the slow rolling prairie lands of the upper Midwest U.S. (Minnesota, South Dakota, Iowa) are the prairie pothole lakes. Sandy, fairly shallow and gently graded, they are homes for multitudes of small fish, insects and amphibians, sunrises and sunsets. For several months in 2014 I drifted about on the upper prairie taking in many once-in-a-lifetime sunrises and sunsets on lonely and dusty back roads. This early summer morning no a pothole near Lake Shetek State Park in southwestern Minnesota, I sat with the sunrise and a small flock of pelicans as they concerned themselves with breakfast while trying to not be concerned with me.
