On the Cusp of Metamorphosis

My son's monarch catepillar had been in its chrysalis for almost two weeks so we were waiting for the butterfly to emerge. On this particular morning, I noticed that it was very dark. I thought it was dead, but my daughter looked closely and saw the pattern of the monarch's wings inside. I rushed the container outside on our back deck so I could take pictures of it. I removed the milkweed from the container and propped it among the flowers on my deck. The morning sun provided the perfect light from behind me, while the blue sky and purple flowers provided beautiful colors beyond the chrysalis. Just a few hours later, the butterfly emerged.
