My first mountain gorilla sighting in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

We hiked for two hours, through the mud and underbrush in the primordial forests of Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda. We had followed the trackers' whistles, and had stopped in a clearing to remove our packs--the gorillas were nearby. We forged into the dense forest, gloves protecting our hands from the thorns and nettles, and suddenly the group came to a stop. That is when I first saw him, through the foliage. I was awestruck.
