Keel-Billed Toucan in Costa Rica

I was in Costa Rica and had travelled to a place where I knew there would be great opportunities with various types of toucans. This toucan flew down to a branch close to my eye-level and was opening his large beak which is a highly efficient thermoregulation system and aids in their feeding behavior so they can sit in one spot and reach for all fruit in range which reduces their energy expenditure. The lodges in this area provide the wild birds with fresh locally grown fruit to encourage the biological diversity of birds in their area and they place an importance on sustainable travel to protect their wildlife and rainforests.
