With no pack ice around Karl XXI Oya, this 3 year old female polar bear was practically stuck on the small island. Since polar bears live with their mothers for about the first two years of their lives, she was still relatively new to being on her own. Older polar bears might take a risk and swim to find food, but this one seemed to be dependent on the bird cliffs until the pack ice returned.
